Can a leopard change its spots

PAS president Hadi Awang is now calling on the Malay-Muslim majority to play a greater role in fostering harmony between races. What hypocrisy!

Hadi, who has built a political career out of bigotry and religious intolerance, has done more to destroy harmony and unity in Malaysia than anyone else. He has insisted, for example, that Malaysia is for Malays and that non-Malays ought not to occupy senior positions in government. He also wants to impose Hudud on everyone including non-Muslims.  As well, his version of an Islamic state reduces non-Muslims to the status of conquered people existing only at the sufferance of Muslim rulers.

If Hadi has his way, Malaysia will become a religious apartheid state in which non-Muslims would be deprived of their constitutional rights. It should come as no surprise then that non-Muslims loathe his policies and remain deeply suspicious of him.

Has Hadi, now that he is on the cusp of power through a backdoor manoeuvre, suddenly changed? Has he abandoned his religious extremism? Has he renounced his antipathy towards non-Muslims?

Of course not. This is simply Hadi at his most cynical, hoping that he can somehow soften his image to better improve his chances of getting a seat at the cabinet table.

Can a leopard change its spots? Perhaps when elephants fly.
